Skiibii, T-Classic deserve Headies nomination

Nigeria’s most prestigious award and yet most controversial, The Headies has returned for its 13th edition. The music award body has been regrettably inconsistent in the past three years. The event for year 2017 was done in 2018 which made it impossible to hold another event in the same year. However, some weeks ago The Headies opened it doors to receive submissions for its event this year.

The nominees list is out and well there are many questions we would love to ask the board as regards their decision with the nominations.

First of all, The Headies Award dropped a build up nomination list which purpose was to highlight all categories that awards would be given. On the build up list, there were these categories ‘Best Reggae/Dancehall‘, ‘Alternative Album‘ and ‘Song Writer of the Year‘. Obviously from the nomination list unveiled, these categories were all removed. The 2019 Headies board have a little explanation to do there.

Would it be that no submissions were made in these categories from the artistes & their management? Before the final list of nominees went out, an explanation should be given why those categories were blotted out.

Again the year in review spans between January 2018 to June 2019 there is a little discrepancy with a song being nominated. The song in question is ‘Like‘ a collaboration with Reekado Banks, Tiwa Savage and guitarist Fiokee. That song was officially released in December 2017 hence it automatically falls out of the year in review. Then it has no business getting nominated for ‘Best Collaboration’.

To more controversial issues; how on God’s green earth is Skiibii not nominated for any award? There are about three categories the singer deserves to bag nominations with his song ‘Sensima’. That song ‘Sensima‘ deserves a spot in the following categories ‘Best Pop Single‘, ‘Best Collaboration‘, and ‘Song of the Year‘. And besides it falls in the year in review, clearly someone was robbed here!

The ‘Next Rated’ and ‘Rookie of the Year’ remain controversial as ever. In the past we saw the likes of Reekado Banks, Ycee, Mayorkun get nominated in the category of ‘Rookie of the Year’ and further process to ‘Next Rated’ as they keep the fire burning. Apparently The Headies went right off the bat to place the likes of Rema, Joeboy, Fireboy DML as Next Rated acts. These guys were barely known 9 months ago. These lads would have been better placed in the ‘Rookie of the Year’ category. Teni won Rookie of the Year at the last Headies and she very much deserved to be on the ‘Next Rated’ list with the likes of Peruzzi, King Perryy, Victor AD etc.

Going by the standard and antecedents, the nominees for this year’s ‘Rookie of the Year’ should be Rema, Fireboy DML, Joeboy, Oxlade, Lyta, T-Classic and Crayon. These guys are fresh and are popping but have done nothing over the top to be regarded as ‘Next Rated’, a hot form would make them more eligible for that category in the next edition of the award.

With all amount of sincerity and fairness why is T-Classic nowhere to be found on the Headies award nominees list? T-Classic the guy who sang hits like ‘Nobody Fine Pass You‘ and ‘Fall In Love‘. Obviously his team made submissions in regards to him but it seems he does not deserve being nominated even as ‘Rookie of the Year’ according to the organizers. Apparently Buju is more deserving of an award than T-Classic. I weep!

Awards should be about impact and relevance. With that being said how is Humblesmith nominated for ‘Hip Hop World Revelation’? In the past year Blaqbonez, Johnny Drille, are even more worthy and have shown more impact than Mr Humblesmith.
