The Match of the Day host couldn’t sit back and let Pele talk down to the Barcelona legend
Gary Lineker has responded to Pele’s claims that Lionel Messi ‘only has one skill’ by making a brilliant comparison.
Messi’s ability has been a topic of debate recently after he was inexplicably named fifth in the running for the 2018 Ballon d’Or.
Brazil legend Pele entered the debate, questioning the attributes of a man many regard to be the greatest to ever kick a ball.
When asked if he thinks Messi is better than he was, the Brazilian told olha de Sao Paulo: “How can you make a comparison between a guy who heads the ball well, shoots with the left, shoots with the right and another who only shoots with one leg, only has one skill and doesn’t head the ball well?
“How can you compare? To compare with Pele, it has to be someone who shoots well with the left, shoots well with the right, and scores headers.”
Lineker, who represented Barcelona during his playing career, and thinks highly of the incredibly gifted Argentine hit back on Twitter.
The Match of the Day host said: “If this is how you judge players then the same would apply to Maradona. Utter nonsense.”
Messi won his first league title with Barcelona back in 2005 before going on to win La Liga an additional eight times.
He first tasted Champions League success in 2006 before going on to win the coveted European crown three more times.
The Argentine has also won the Ballon d’Or – widely considered to be the most prestigious personal accolade in the sport – on five ocassions.
